How to Use a 4G Mobile Proxy on iPhone (UK Guide)
Three ways to put your iPhone behind a dedicated UK 4G mobile proxy — OpenVPN, Shadowsocks or Wi-Fi proxy settings — and which one to choose.
Want your iPhone to browse and use apps through a genuine UK mobile IP? There are three ways to connect it to a 4G mobile proxy. The right one depends on whether you need every app to use the proxy, or just Safari over Wi-Fi.
Which method should you use?
| Method | Covers | Works on | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| OpenVPN Connect app | All apps and traffic | Wi-Fi and mobile data | Instagram, TikTok, everyday use |
| Shadowsocks app | All apps and traffic | Wi-Fi and mobile data | Networks that block VPNs, lightweight always-on use |
| Wi-Fi HTTP proxy | Most apps, on one Wi-Fi network | Wi-Fi only | Quick tests, Safari |
For social media apps we recommend OpenVPN or Shadowsocks. Both route the whole phone, so no app can slip past the proxy. OpenVPN is the simplest to set up; Shadowsocks is light, stable and harder for restrictive networks to detect and block.
Method 1: OpenVPN (recommended)
- Download your .ovpn file from the dashboard (choose the OpenVPN option when ordering, or contact us to add it).
- Install the free OpenVPN Connect app from the App Store.
- Open the .ovpn file on your iPhone (from Files, AirDrop or email) and choose Open in OpenVPN.
- Tap Add, enter your proxy username and password if asked, and allow iOS to add the VPN configuration.
- Switch the connection on. A VPN icon appears in the status bar.
Check it's working by visiting an IP-checker website in Safari: you should see a UK mobile carrier (O2, EE or Three) as the ISP.
Method 2: Shadowsocks (recommended)
- Ask us for Shadowsocks access when you order (or contact us to add it). You'll get your Shadowsocks details: server, port, password and encryption method — or a ready-made
ss://link / QR code. - Install a Shadowsocks client from the App Store, such as Shadowrocket.
- Tap + to add a server. Either scan the QR code / paste the
ss://link, or choose type Shadowsocks and enter the server, port, password and encryption method by hand. - Save, select the server and switch the connection on. Allow iOS to add the VPN configuration the first time.
Use the same IP-checker test as above to confirm you're on a UK mobile IP.
Method 3: Wi-Fi HTTP proxy
This routes traffic over one Wi-Fi network only — it does nothing when you're on mobile data.
- Open Settings → Wi-Fi.
- Tap the ⓘ next to the network you're connected to.
- Scroll to HTTP Proxy → Configure Proxy → Manual.
- Enter your proxy's server (host) and port.
- Turn on Authentication and enter your proxy username and password.
- Tap Save.
Some apps ignore the system proxy setting, which is why we recommend OpenVPN or Shadowsocks for anything important.
Tips for Instagram and TikTok on iPhone
- Match your settings to the proxy. Set the iPhone's region, language and time zone to the proxy's country.
- Set the OS fingerprint to iOS in your proxy dashboard, so the network layer matches your device.
- Don't rotate mid-session. Keep the same IP while you're using an account; rotate between sessions.
- One device, one set of accounts. Avoid logging lots of accounts into the same phone, even behind a proxy.
Troubleshooting
- Nothing loads: check the port, username and password, and that your proxy is online in the dashboard.
- Still showing your home IP: make sure OpenVPN or your Shadowsocks app is connected, or that the Wi-Fi proxy is set on the network you're actually using.
- Slow after rotating: give the modem a few seconds to reconnect after an IP change.
